My Advice to Northerners Thinking of Moving to Mérida

imagePeople often ask me what led to me deciding to uproot my life and start a new adventure in the Yucatán. I actually had to retire early for health reasons and I was denied disability. Fortunately I have a very small pension I’m squeezing by on until I can collect social security when I turn sixty two in about fifteen more months.

I spent countless hours for several years devouring the Yucatan Living website and found it to be a very valuable tool in the planning of my retirement. It is also interactive and the very nice people who run it are friendly and helpful and usually respond to inquiries within a short period of time.

http://cemsureste.com (This is my favorite facility and the one mentioned in the article. Most of the doctors and nurses speak enough English to communicate very well and they are very friendly and attentive to their patients needs and comfort.

If you do decide to come visit, I can recommend some nice hotels or set you up with a friend who manages vacation rentals. I’d be happy to show you around, take you to my church (don’t worry I won’t try to convert you, it’s just a great place to meet a lot of very nice people) and my favorite sidewalk cafe and a few museums and galleries and introduce you to some of my friends.

Cheers!
Spike

What neighbourhood do you live in, Philip, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m going to be looking to rent when I move. I notice people seem to be going farther afield from Centro these days. I love Garcia Gineres and Itzinma, but they’re expensive.

Thank you for your comment Mary! I live in San Sebastián. People are starting to move here and to La Ermita but there are still deals to be found.

I like it here, it doesn’t have the posh polish of Santiago and some of the northern neighborhoods but it its clean and close to the Centro. It’s very safe and I find a certain charm in the down to earth “grittiness”.

        –cheers!

For me, Merida = Magnificent. I was there in Feb and will return soon. I live in Lake Chapala and travel extensively in Mexico. I found a great deal on Airbnb. I speak Spanish. I am a decorative photographer and was impressed on how photogenic Merida is. I met so many kind people. I felt like a rock-star as everyone treated me with respect, kindness, and jokes too. It’s as if everyone graduated from a hospitality course and all got A+. Here are some of my first impression images.

Thank you for your response Jaime. I know what you mean about the “rock star” treatment. Especially when I go to my favorite restaurants. The waiters all greet me by name and seem honestly happy to see me.

For some reason I can’t open the link to your photos. If you wouldn’t mind send me a friend request on FB maybe I could see them then. I’m on there as Philip Andrew Merrick. One L in Philip.

    Thanks again!
